Palm Springs WestFest - Frank Bogert Memorial Rodeo
Palm Springs Gets Back in the Saddle with First Rodeo in 17 years

A professional rodeo will rumble into Palm Springs for the first time in 17 years today, along with 140 animals, two stages of live music, 6,000 square feet of “high-end” Western retail merchandise, carnival rides and vendor booths.

“It's like cowboy Christmas,” local business owner and rodeo enthusiast Sig Hall said Thursday, as staff and volunteers set up the Palm Springs Wild West Fest and Mayor Frank Bogert Memorial PRCA Rodeo. The event runs through Sunday on a 10-acre site next to the Palm Springs Convention Center.

Temecula Student Rides High at Palm Springs Rodeo

A 19-year-old from Temecula was crowned queen Saturday of an upcoming Palm Springs rodeo. Jessica Tourino became rodeo queen of the 2010 Frank Bogert Memorial Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association event during a ceremony at Spa Resort Casino in Palm Springs. Tourino is a student at Mount San Jacinto College and a former Miss Temecula runner-up.

She and her mother own a clothing boutique, The Dirty Cowgirl. She's also a spokeswoman for Petrol Jeans and Angel Eyewear. She is working with Angel Eyewear on a campaign to fight breast cancer called "Ride for the Fight."

The five contestants were asked about horse care, horse anatomy and about who Frank Bogert was.

“He brought a lot to the table for Palm Springs because he was one of Palm Springs' true cowboys and a phenomenal mayor,” Tourino said. Earlier in the rainy day, the young women were judged on a riding pattern, how well they controlled their horse — including making the horse do slide stops — and how well they showcased the horse.

Amanda Leckband, 19, of Brawley, Danielle Williams, 21, of Yucaipa, and locals Nicole Abruscato, 19, of Palm Desert and Katie Brown, 23, of Palm Springs, also were hopefuls. Brown, who rode her quarterhorse, Patrick, said the experience was exciting. “I worked with him on doing lead changes and learning how to halt. He's very good,” Brown said.

The rodeo queen's role is to promote Palm Springs and the Palm Springs rodeo, said J. Alex Gomez, rodeo spokesman. The rodeo and Palm Springs Wild West Fest, a celebration of Western culture, are scheduled for March 12-14.
